Onboard Safety Compliance Interview with L.J. Yacht Services.

Digital and Paper Logbook Solutions in 2024.

Retaining crucial data related to the operation and performance of a vessel is of utmost importance for yacht safety compliance. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Liz Jackson, ex-crew member and founder of L.J Yacht Services, to delve into how they have established themselves as pioneers in the creation of paper and digital logbooks for yachts within the superyacht industry. Their expertise extends beyond logbooks to include custom yacht stationery, emphasizing their comprehensive approach to ensuring yachts meet regulatory standards while maintaining a high level of personalized service.

Leaders in printed logbooks

YACTHNEEDS Marketplace: “Who is L.J Yacht Services?”

L.J Yacht Services: “We are leaders in producing printed log books, boasting over 20 years of experience in the yachting industry. Our business model revolves around meeting the demands of crew and owners needing to digitize their record-keeping requirements for their yacht and management operations.”

Company that specializes in logbooks

L.J Yacht Services: “The idea was an organic one going back to 2006 when I saw the opportunity to expand the business and develop it into a fully functional business model. We have always prioritized providing a first-class product while offering exceptional customer service from the initial contact to product delivery and aftersales.

This commitment to our product and our expertise has driven the expansion of our range of options and products over the years, influenced by a changing market and customer requests stemming from the positive results obtained from the logbooks. When clients reach out to us, we carefully listen to their requirements and offer guidance based on their feedback. We are dedicated to going the extra mile to source anything specific, whether it be leather, a specific pantone or color swatch, and collaborating with build teams and designers for new builds to incorporate any required aspects or textures.”

Customised, unique logbook by request

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “Are there unique features or customization options that make L.J Yacht Services stand out?”

L.J Yacht Services: “We can customize anything for any department, which is the beauty of a customized product. This includes adding logos, bindings, sizes, materials, and color combinations. It always surprises clients that we can produce anything or bring to life any vision they may have.

At the initial stage, we simply need to understand the requirements for the yacht’s custom printed logbooks. This could include the data entries you need to include, the layout, the columns, the measurement units, and any other content you need to incorporate. Using notes, conversations, template edits, or any other preferred method, we can quickly grasp your needs. Our clients truly appreciate our industry knowledge at this stage, as we have encountered most logbook and yacht types and can swiftly understand your specific vessel operating environment.

Upon quote approval, we will proceed to create your logbook design.

In short, we can fulfill whatever you need; your imagination is the only limitation.

Yacht branding

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “What else can you customize?”

L.J Yacht Services: “Driven by customer requests and positive experiences with logbooks, we expanded into offering custom stationery. The demand for custom stationery, different format ring binders, and vessel self-inking stamps has made this a growth area for us in the last few years.

Stationery and custom elements are naturally noticed by owners and guests, adding that extra 5% which enhances the overall experience. It demonstrates the level of detail and pride the vessel has taken to make the experience even more enjoyable, from the custom cocktail or menu folder presented before dinner service to the guest folder in the cabins. When guests use the notepads and letterhead, every aspect has been meticulously considered, linking it back to the overall experience and the vessel’s branding.”

Digital and hybrid logbooks

L.J Yacht Services: “The yachting industry has transitioned towards more automated and digital processes, reducing reliance on paper documentation onboard. We are all living in a more digital era, which naturally aligns with a more automated process for everything onboard, including logbooks.

In 2019, we were approached by clients to develop a digital logbook platform that would ultimately replace the need for paper logbooks. This platform meets all legal requirements, is approved by class societies, and aligns with the adaptability and efficiency needed for day-to-day operations in the superyacht industry. We are now witnessing an increasing number of clients either transitioning to digital logbook record-keeping or adopting a hybrid approach.

The industry has become more regulated than when I was a stewardess, which is ultimately beneficial for all involved. However, it also brings a greater responsibility to crew, owners, and management to ensure that all vessel information is maintained and recorded accurately for the vessel’s longevity. With the need to keep records for several years, we are discovering inventive places where the crew store them, ultimately taking up valuable space that could be used elsewhere.”

From Paper to Digital logbooks

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “Are there specific challenges or trends in the industry that have influenced the development of your products?”

L.J Yacht Services: “The biggest challenge we have had has been the mindset of moving from paper to digital record-keeping, which, from an overall perspective, offers numerous benefits for the vessel, owners, flag state, and class society. It allows vessels to retain all data for years, accessible at the click of a button; any entry or receipt needed can be found in seconds. This shift also frees up space to just one laptop or tablet. Vessels wanting to reduce their reliance on paper and the need to ship items can be onboarded within minutes.”

Innovative solutions for Yachts

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “Are there any upcoming products or services that L.J.Yacht Services is planning to introduce?”

L.J Yacht Services: “We are continually expanding our range of paper-based products and custom livery, remaining open to any client request and always ready to assist them regardless of the scale. In the digital realm, we are broadening our range of titles and consistently listening to our clients to continually incorporate features into the platform, making their day-to-day interactions as easy and seamless as possible. In 2024, we have new elements and features coming to the digital platform that will further expand it into new markets. Our clients are aware that we are always open to change, and we have always taken a can-do approach when it comes to fulfilling their needs, making changes, or considering their thoughts.”

Logbooks for all departments

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “What are the most popular products you see yachts ordering?”

L.J Yacht Services: “The most popular products are paper hardback logbooks for all departments, mainly driven by the Bridge and Engine Room departments, followed by ring binders and self-inking stamps.”

Transition to Digital Logbooks

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “How do you envision the future of log books and yacht-related stationery in the yachting industry?”

L.J Yacht Services: “We are already witnessing the future evolution with the transition to digital logbooks and the numerous benefits this brings to clients on a daily and long-term basis. Additionally, we have noticed a significant increase in custom livery, which represents a prominent growth area for us.”

How to order logbooks and customized stationery?

YACHTNEEDS Marketplace: “How can the crew order logbooks or customized stationery?”

L.J Yacht Services: “For clients wanting to start their journey in discussing logbooks print or digital and livery the best initial contact is via YACHTNEEDS marketplace who will communicate with us and start the process in ensuring we understand your requirements and vessel’s needs, we will continue to support YACHTNEEDS and the clients through their complete process with us.”
